Telegraph machine. View of an old telegraph machine. This was used to send information from one terminal to another as a series of electric pulses. The operator would set the dial (at right) to the appropriate character and then depress the lever (centre) to send the character. The machine would then translate the characters into an appropriate series of pulses which were sent along a line to a remote receiver. The receiver would then translate the pulses back into the original text. In this way a message was simultaneously constructed and sent.
