Early transmitting systems included three large photo-electric cells which produce electric current in response to light reflected from the details of the scene. Light from the arc lamp (far right) passes through a lens to the scanning disc (black disc, middle), which sweeps the light beam across the scene. The light reflects off the woman and is picked up by the photo-electric cells (long tubes, centre) which convert it into an electric signal. The electric signal is then passed on to a television receiver (television set) and converted back into light to produce an image on its screen.
