Early 20th-century telephone switchboard. Four women at a telephone switchboard in the early years of the twentieth century. They are using headphones to listen to incoming calls, and using wires to make connections on the switchboard in front of them to re-route the calls to the required destinations. The board at upper left gives the numbers for the emergency services. The telephone was invented in 1876.
