Mariner's compass, a version of which was invented by Pierre de Maricourt in the 13th century. Pierre de Maricourt (fl. French scholar who experimented with magnetism and wrote the first extant treatise describing the properties of magnets. This was a letter entitled Epistola de Magnete (1269) detailing Pierre's magnetic experiments and instruments. This illustration was published in a 19th century copy of Epistola de Magnete in 1868.
