Historical recording anemometer. A recording anemometer, or anemograph, is used to measure and record wind speed over time. The cup-shaped vanes catch the wind and rotate. This rotation moves a pen that traces the data onto a rotating drum (bottom centre). The speed of rotation is used to calculate wind speed.
