Royal Astronomical Society gold medal. This is the reverse of the medal, which is decorated with the head of Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727). The gold medal is the highest award of the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS) and was first presented in 1824. Two medals are awarded every year. One for achievement in astronomy and one for achievement in geophysics. For an image showing the front of the medal see V700/277.
