The Maiden in the Moon, as drawn on a Moon map by the Italian astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini (1625-1712), published in 1679. This area is on the right-hand side of the Moon. North is at right. The full map can be seen in image V700/343. The mapping of the Moon with telescopes started with Galileo in 1610, and then developed further during the 17th century as telescopes improved, allowing details like this to be recorded.
