Hercules constellation, 15th century artwork. Engraving of Hercules killing the giant serpent (Ladon, or Draco) in the Garden of the Hesperides, with Latin text. This task, to recover the Golden Apples, was the eleventh of the Twelve Labours of Hercules. The black asterisks show the position of the stars that make up this constellation. This artwork is from the 1482 edition of Hyginus's Poeticon Astronomicon (Poetic Astronomy). This 1st-century BC star atlas was republished several times in the medieval period with woodcut engravings of the stars and constellations.
