Serpentarius constellation, 15th century artwork. Engraving of Serpentarius (the Serpent-holder), with Latin text. This constellation is now known as Ophiuchus, and the serpent is the constellation Serpens. The black asterisks show the position of the stars that make up these constellations. This artwork is from the 1482 edition of Hyginus's Poeticon Astronomicon (Poetic Astronomy). This 1st-century BC star atlas was republished several times in the medieval period with woodcut engravings of the stars and constellations.
