Early scientific photography. Photograph of a calotype made by Anna Atkins in 1843, showing a plant Laminaria saccharina. This image appeared in the book Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions, and was the first application of photography for illustrating a science book. The original cyanotypes were blue and white, rather than black and white, images.
