Back somersault. High-speed photographic sequence of an athlete doing a backwards somersault. This sequence, by the British-American photographer Eadweard James Muybridge (1830-1904), is from an album of photographs taken in California, USA, from 1872-1879. The jump runs from left to right from upper left. Muybridge pioneered the use of high-speed photography and employed novel techniques to analyse animal and human locomotion. He began his work on high-speed photography when he was commissioned to discover whether galloping horses have all of their feet off the ground at certain times. He proved that they did.
