Chemical warfare. Aerial photograph of chlorine gas cylinders lined up in rows in a field. The first row (left) are discharging gas, blown by the wind. The rows at centre and right are yet to be activated. The first use of chemical weapons was on 22nd April 1915, when Germany released chlorine gas from cylinders on the western front at Ypres in Belgium.
