Standard weights and measures. These English weights (back row) and measuring cups (front row) date from Tudor times (16th century). They were an attempt to try and standardize the masses and volumes of goods sold. It was not until 1799, with the introduction of the French SI units, that a global, standard system of measurement was introduced.
