Caption

Early firefighting equipment, 1569. Historical artwork showing a British 16th century pump used to extinguish fires, with a Latin inscription at top left. Water is carried to the tub, then fed into the pumping device. This was like a giant syringe, with a threaded plunger driven manually by a handle at the back. The water was directed through a pipe onto the fire. This image was printed in The Picture Magazine in 1894.
