US Civil War embalming. Embalming surgeon at work on a Union soldier's body during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Embalming is a technique used to preserve dead bodies until they can be buried. Bodily fluids, such as blood, are replaced by embalming fluids. The tube entering the dead body at centre right is part of this process.
