Light micrograph of several colonies of Eudorina, a Volvox-like organism that lies between the plant & animal kingdom, being classified either with the green algae (plants) or with the flagellates (animals). The colony usually contains 32 cells, although 16- & 64-celled colonies are sometmes found. The cells are spherical & possess a chloroplast, an eyespot & twin flagellae. They are arranged around the periphery of a sphere of mucilage, with the flagellae extending out into the surrounding water. The individual cells are linked by fine cytoplasmic connections.
