Giardia lamblia. Coloured light micrograph of the protozoan Giardia lamblia. Here, a number of these single-celled, parasitic organisms with flagellae are seen (oval-shaped, brown). They are the cause of the disease giardiasis (or lambliasis). It is an infection of the small intestine most common in tropical areas. Giardia lamblia attaches by means of sucking discs to microvilli in the human intestine, reducing liquid absorption which may lead to diarrhoea. Abdominal cramps, swelling and nausea may also occur. The organism is spread by direct contact or through contaminated food and water. Magnification: x1,000 at 35mm size.
