Trichomonas vaginalis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the parasitic protozoan Trichomonas vaginalis. This protozoan is the cause of sexually transmitted vaginitis. This organism is equipped with whip-like organs called flagellae (yellow), which enable it to move around. It infects the genito-urinary tract of both sexes. In men this is often symptomless, but in women it causes painful inflammation of the vagina (vaginitis) and often a discharge. Transmission is commonly, but not exclusively, through sexual intercourse. The infection can be treated with the drug metronidazole, which kills the protozoa. Magnification: x4500 at 6x6cm size.
