The marine dinoflagellate Ceratium is found in both freshwater and saltwater. Dinoflagellates are single-celled protozoa that float in the water column as plankton. Ceratium is characterized by its elongated hollow horns (long thin). These assist with floatation. Dinoflagellates usually have two flagellae (not visible) and thus are also capable of self-propulsion. The colouring and poisoning of sea water in Red tides is due to some species of dinoflagellates.
