Caption

Thick-headed fly (Physocephala rufipes). This fly is a wasp mimic. As well as having the same colouring, it reaches the same length as many wasps, 9 to 13mm. It also possesses an imitation wasp's waist. The imitation of dangerous animals by harmless ones is known as Batesian mimicry. Photographed at Coed-y-Tydynn Du, Wales.
