Stable fly (Stomoxys calcitrans) antennae. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the antennae (sensory structures) of a stable fly, showing bristle-like extensions (aristas, centre left and right). The antennae lie between two large compound eyes (red), seen at upper left and upper right. This fly feeds on the blood of mammals and is a significant pest of livestock.
