A female mosquito of the species Aedes aegypti, which transmits the virus that causes yellow fever, feeds on a human arm. The mosquito's belly is swollen and red from her meal of blood. The males of the species do not feed on blood, which is necessary to the female's reproductive cycle, and therefore do not transmit the virus.
