Robert Hooke's drawing of a "water insect or gnat", a species of mosquito larva, published in his book Micrographia, 1665. Hooke was curator of experiments at the Royal Society of London founded in 1660. In the book he expresses the view that this creature formed as a result of the purefaction of rain. The three smaller drawings are of different stages of metamorphosis.
