Caption

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a mosquito (Anopheles sp.) on human skin. The Anopheles genus includes the malaria carrying mosquitos. The specimen here is female, as only the females bite to take blood. This is necessary for the correct growth of the mosquito's eggs. Clearly visible in this image is a large compound eye and the proboscis with which the mosquito 'bites' (process from head running parallel to closest leg). Magnification x18 at 6x7cm size.
