Yellow fever mosquito. Macrophotograph of a female yellow fever mosquito (Aedes aegypti) feeding on a human. This mosquito lives throughout the world in tropical areas. Only the female feeds on blood, using her proboscis to penetrate the skin. In doing so she may transmit several diseases to humans, including yellow fever, filariasis and dengue fever. Mosquito-borne diseases are a major problem throughout the tropics. Magnification: x3 at 35mm size.
