Feeding mosquito. Macrophotograph of a Culex quinquefasciatus mosquito feeding on a human. The female mosquito feeds on the blood of vertebrates, including humans, piercing the skin and sucking the blood through the feeding tube (proboscis, narrow brown tube, centre right) on her head. She uses the blood meal when producing eggs. The male mosquito does not feed on blood. C. quinquefasciatus is a vector for several disease-causing arboviruses. Magnification unknown.
