Mosquito head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of a mosquito (family Culicidae). The two large compound eyes (blue) dominate the head. Each eye is formed of multiple facets, called ommatidia. The mosquito also has two antennae, the bases of which are between the two eyes. Several mosquito species are vectors for human diseases such as malaria and yellow fever. Magnification: x160 when printed 10cm wide.
