Feeding mosquito. Female Anopheles gambiae feeding on human blood. The female mosquito feeds by piercing human skin and sucking blood through the feeding tube (proboscis, centre right). The blood can be seen filling the mosquito's body (centre) and will be used for the production of eggs. This particular species of mosquito is the most important vector for the transmission of malaria to humans in Africa.
