Caption

Mosquito proboscis. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the proboscis of a mosquito (family Culicidae). Female mosquitoes use their proboscis to pierce the skin and drink the blood of mammals. Because of this, they are vectors for a number of important diseases, such as yellow fever and malaria.
