Mosquito head, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The mosquito's (family Culicidae) large, compound eyes (purple) and antennae (centre) dominated the head. The piercing stylus emerges from the proboscis (bottom centre) and runs up the centre of the image. The stylus is used for feeding. Magnification: x250 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
