Caption

Ant head. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of the wood ant, Formica fusca. Two round compound eyes are seen above the long antennae; the mouthparts consist of toothed (serrated) mandibles which deliver a powerful cutting bite. This species of ant is social, and acts as a slave for the blood-red ant Formica sanguinea. Inseminated females of the blood-red ant invade the nests of Formica fusca, steal their pupae, and the wood ants that hatch are made to work for the strange queen as though she were their own. Magnification: x25 at 6x4.5cm size.
