Head of a wasp. Macrophotograph of the head of the wasp Vespa tropica. Two large compound eyes (black) are seen; above them are a pair of tube- like antennae used in touch and smell; the mouthparts (at lower centre) consist of toothed biting mandibles and palps. Vespa tropica is a unique and highly specialized wasp. It feeds on various species of Polistinae wasps, depending on these insects for its protein diet. It transports its prey digested, carrying up to 50% of its body weight to transport food to the nest. Vespa tropica is a social wasp, with the colony containing a queen who builds the communal nest.
