Californian harvester ant head. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the head of a Californian harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex sp. The ant's compound eye is black. It's large antennae are seen at far right with mouthparts at lower right. The ant's head is covered in microscopic- sensitive hairs. Two of the ant's front legs are seen at bottom. This species is also known as a giant red-stinging ant. It is a native of North America. It gathers seeds which are laid in large stores in preparation for forthcoming dry seasons. Magnification: x16 at 6x6cm size.
