Honey ants on cakes. View of frozen edible honey ants (Melophorus bagoti and Camponotus sp.) on top of chocolate cup desserts. Honey ants get their name from the specialized worker ants seen here. These ants, called repletes, hang down from the ceiling of large underground chambers in ant nests, storing sweet nectar provided by other worker ants in their swollen abdomens. The eating of insects, entomophagy, occurs all over the world, and includes moths, grasshoppers and beetles. Insects, along with arachnids like spiders and scorpions, are good sources of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Photographed in Australia.
