Ant head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of an unidentified ant (family Formicidae). A round compound eye (red) is seen at upper left. Two long antennae are mounted on the head at upper centre. The mouthparts consist of toothed (serrated) mandibles (lower centre) which deliver a powerful cutting bite. Ants are social insects that can form colonies of several million ants. Magnification: x34 at 6x7cm size.
