Ant head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of an unidentified ant (family Formicidae). A compound eye (red) is seen at upper right. The long antennae (upper left) and maxillary palps (mouthparts, lower left) are sense organs. The toothed (serrated) mandibles (centre left) are the biting mouthparts. Ants are social insects that can form colonies of several million ants. Magnification: x36 at 6x7cm size.
