Ants. Composite image of rows of unidentified ants (family Formicidae). Ants are social insects, living in colonies that may number millions of individuals. Each colony shows a high degree of social organization, consisting mainly of sterile female worker ants plus a few fertile males and females. All of the ants are the progeny of a single, large female known as the queen.
