Bee. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an unidentified bee (superfamily Apoidea). Its compound eye (orange, centre left) and antennae (above eye) are seen. The three bumps on top of the head are simple eyes (ocelli), which cannot focus but are able to detect differences in light intensity. The bee feeds on the pollen and nectar of flowering plants. It is an important pollinator, carrying pollen between plants on its hairy body and back legs. Magnification: x25 at 6x7cm size.
