Caption

Bee. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an unidentified bee (superfamily Apoidea). The compound eyes (centre left & right) and antennae (top of head) are seen. The three bumps on top of the head are simple eyes (ocelli), which cannot focus but are able to detect differences in light intensity. The bee feeds on the pollen and nectar of flowering plants. They are important pollinators, carrying pollen between plants on their hairy bodies and back legs. Magnification: x11 at 6x7cm size.
