Ant head. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the head of an unidentified ant (family Formicidae). The ant sees using compound eyes (centre, orange) that produce a mosaic image. It senses movement and taste using a pair of antennae mounted on the head (upper right & lower left). The ant's mouthparts (lower centre) consist of leg-like structures known as palps (not seen) and serrated mandibles that deliver powerful cutting bites. The ant is a social insect that can form colonies of several millions. Magnification: x38 at 6x7cm size.
