Orchid bee (Subfamily Euglossini) specimen. This brightly coloured tropical bee has a long tongue, allowing it to reach nectar in deep- throated tropical plants. It is a fast, strong flier, travelling up to 45 kilometres in search of flowers. The male is especially important in the pollination of some orchids, from which it collects aromatic fragrances that are stored in specialised receptacles on the hind legs. These fragrances are thought to play a role in territorial display and courtship. Orchid bees are only found in Central and South America. This specimen is from Peru.
