Emerging butterfly. Priam's Birdwing butterfly emerging from its chrysalis. Within the chrysalis the butterfly changed its body shape, a process known as metamorphosis, from that of a caterpillar to the adult form seen here. As it emerges, the butterfly pumps blood into its soft body parts to expand them. These then dry out and harden.
