Cocoon. Sectioned cocoon of a silkworm (Bombyx mori) showing the pupa (brown) inside it. The cocoon was spun by a silkworm to protect itself as it pupates during metamorphosis into a silk moth. The silk of the cocoons is harvested for use in clothing and fabrics. Once the cocoon has been produced, the pupa is killed to ensure the silk is not damaged by the emerging moth.
