Mating butterflies. Pair of mating tropical butterflies (order Lepidoptera) on a fern leaf. The butterflies can remain together for up to 30 minutes whilst the male fertilises the female. The female will then usually lay her eggs on a plant that will serve as a food source for the larvae when they hatch. In some butterfly species, the larvae develop into predators which feed on aphids & other small insects.
