Caption

Peacock butterfly chrysalis. The hanging chrysalis or pupa contains a metamorphosing caterpillar (larva) of the Eurasian peacock butterfly (Inachis io). The chrysalis has a silvery-gold sheen, and is attached to a leaf by a small amount of silk. During metamorphosis, the caterpillar's organs degenerate completely, and a sexually mature butterfly develops.
