Peacock butterfly (Inachis io) on a marjoram plant. The peacock butterfly is found throughout the UK from March until October. The distinctive "false eye" patterns are used for scaring predators. It is found in meadows, gardens and roadside verges and its eggs are laid in batches of about 500 on the underside of stinging nettle leaves - the caterpillars' favourite food.
