Red admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta) on a rotting apple. This species is distributed widely; being found in fields and meadows across much of the world, including Europe, North America, North Africa and Asia. It migrates to warmer regions in the winter, with the female laying her eggs on nettle plants. The adult wingspan is around 5 centimetres.
