Eyed hawkmoth. Close-up of an eyed hawkmoth (Smerinthus ocellata) on a tree. Native to Europe and western Asia, this moth is found in a variety of habitats, with its caterpillars preferring the leaves of poplar and willow trees. It has a wingspan of up to 8 centimetres and uses the eyespots on its wings to confuse predators.
