British butterflies, historical illustration of some of the butterfly species that were known to occur in the British Isles in the 19th century. The butterflies here are: 1. High brown fritillary (Argynnis adippe), 2. Silver-washed fritillary (Argynnis paphia), 3. Greasy fritillary (Melitaea aurinia), 4. Glanville fritillary (Melitaea cinxia), 5. Heath fritillary (Melitaea athalia), 6. Heath fritillary, (Melitaea athalia), (underside), 7. Comma (Vanessa C-album) 8. Large tortoiseshell (Vanessa polychloros) and 9. Small tortoiseshell (Vanessa urticae). Taken from: British Butterflies and Moths by William Furneaux, which was published in 1897.
