British moths, historical illustration of some of the moth species that were known to occur in the British Isles in the 19th century. The moths here are: 1. Privet hawk moth (Sphinx ligustri), 2. Spurge hawk moth (Deilephil euphorbia), 3. Large elephant hawk moth (Choerocampa elpenor), 4. Eyed hawk (Smerinthus ocellatus), 5. Lime hawk moth (Smerinthus tiliae), 6. Hummingbird hawk moth (Macroglossa stellatarum), 7. Broad-bordered five- spotted burnet (Zygaena trifolii). Taken from: British Butterflies and Moths by William Furneaux, which was published in 1897.
